Dear President Obama,
My name is Carmen A. Ionescu and I am a Romanian citizen who was fortunate enough to attend a college in the USA. I am a big democratic supporter of yours, and while now I am back home in Romania, I still feel a little bit American after 5 years spent in the States. I therefore thought of writing to you to ask for help.
Since returning back to my home country Romania after college, I have been appalled with the way the Romanian government is attending the stray dog problem. Romania has had for decades an ongoing problem with the stray dog population. Some years ago, the government proceeded with the mass killing of hundreds of thousands of stray dogs. Euthanasia would be an euphemism for what they did-some videos from those years clearly show men beating to death stray dogs, or breaking their spines and letting them die. As someone who has a dog, I imagine you understand how jarring this is.
The mass stray dog killings from years ago didn't bring the desired effect, since the dogs that survived those years continued to have babies, and now the stray population is again disturbingly high. Nowadays, the Romanian government wants to intervene again and legitimise mass dog killings one more time.
I am writing to ask you if you could possibly address this issue to our Romanian president, Traian Basescu. President Basescu won't listen to his people, and, after all, he was the Mayor of our capital who allowed and encouraged the mass dog killings from years ago. Now President of our country, he does not seem to have more humane thoughts for the poor dogs that should be neutered/spayed instead of mass murdered.
I know you are overly busy with all the responsibilities on your shoulders. All I know is that it must be extremely hard to be in your shoes. But I am really hoping some external diplomatic pressure will bring a change in the attitude of our President towards the stray dogs that didn't ask to be born anyways. I was therefore hoping you would address this issue to our President, so that the lives of hundreds of thousands of dogs would be spared. Nobody wants stray dogs in the streets, but we don't want them mass murdered either. The people I represent and I believe that neutering and spaying the stray dogs would be enough to contain this national problem, with no need for mass murders.
Thank you very much, and God bless you and your family!

- George G Vest
