THE AFRICAN PAINTED DOGhttp://www.imagineanimals.com
It is estimated there are less than 5,500 African painted dogs remaining in the wild in the southern and eastern countries of Africa.
Habitat fragmentation is one of the leading causes for the painted dogs decline, however clashes with humans are also considered a major threat.
Though the African painted dog is believed to be a threat to livestock, the facts do not necessarily support this theory. However, the lack of facts has not stopped humans from killing them on site.
Another run-in with humans that is causing a threat to their survival, is exactly that; run in with humans. Or rather being ‘run over’ by cars. Road accidents are becoming a more and more frequent cause of death for the African painted dog.
Other issues that threaten the survival of the painted dog is loss of habitat and competing with other carnivores for food that is becoming more and more scarce.
